Nano-emulsified THC, sometimes marketed as “nano-infused” THC, is regular THC oil broken down into droplets so small they mix directly into water instead of floating on top of it. Shrink the droplet enough, and a fat-soluble compound starts behaving like it's water-soluble.
That single change is why some THC drinks kick in faster and mix into anything, while others need a good shake, or never fully blend at all. Here's what's actually happening at the droplet level, and how Wims built Pocket-Tonic around it.
What Does “Nano-Emulsified” Actually Mean?
THC is naturally fat-soluble, not water-soluble, which is why plain THC oil sits in its own layer on top of water rather than blending in, the same way oil separates from vinegar in a salad dressing until you shake it. Nano-emulsification does something similar, but permanently: it mechanically breaks the oil into droplets roughly 20 to 200 nanometers across, thousands of times smaller than a normal oil droplet, then stabilizes them with a food-safe surfactant so they stay suspended instead of separating back out.
At that size, the droplets behave differently. Smaller droplets create dramatically more surface area for the same amount of oil, which is what makes the mixture look clear instead of cloudy and lets it disperse evenly through liquid instead of pooling on top, according to research on nanoemulsion technology published in Cannabis Science and Technology.
How Does Nano-Emulsified THC Get Absorbed Differently?
That larger surface area doesn't just change how the liquid looks, it changes how the body absorbs it. Smaller droplets cross the gut lining faster and more completely than a large oil droplet can, and nanoemulsion research on drug bioavailability points to this same surface-area effect as the reason nano-scale delivery systems improve absorption of fat-soluble compounds generally, not just THC.
In a controlled crossover study, a self-nanoemulsifying THC/CBD formulation produced more than double the bioavailability of a standard oil-based formulation, with a meaningfully faster time to peak effect, according to a peer-reviewed crossover study on PubMed Central. In practice, that's the difference between waiting an hour or more to feel anything and feeling a lift within 10 to 20 minutes.
How Does Wims Use Nano-Emulsification in Pocket-Tonic?
Pocket-Tonic's 4mg THC and 4mg CBD formula is nano-emulsified specifically so it can go into any drink, not just a specially formulated can. Because the droplets are small enough to disperse in liquid on their own, a packet mixes evenly into a cocktail, a seltzer, or plain water without shaking, stirring for a long time, or needing a fatty base to help it along.
“We didn’t want people shaking a bottle every time or waiting an hour to feel anything,” says Lauren, CEO of Wims. “Nano-emulsification meant the packet could genuinely go into any drink, water included, and work the same way every time.”
