Wims a la muses and making
Welcome to Wims A La, where we share our favorite pastimes and pleasures to pair with a glass of Wims. This edition is all about creativity, and embracing the inspiration Wims unlocks.
When you snap-squeeze-stir yourself a glass of Wims, you might find yourself suddenly enchanted by a wellspring of artistic ideas, a newfound appreciation for the aesthetic, an irresistible craving for play. If and when this mood strikes, it is highly recommended to channel your budding creative spirit into an afternoon of making. So with Wims as your muse, we present to you three simple yet satisfying artistic endeavors—no experience necessary.
Sun Prints
In collaboration with the sun, this medium prints stark white silhouettes on a deep blue background. Also known as cyanotype, it uses a simple chemical solution that changes color when exposed to light—so while the background develops into a rich shade of blue, the objects’ white outlines remain.
Start by collecting objects with striking shapes, or interesting light patterns: think lace, leaves, jewelry, bottles, flowers, and so on. Working in near darkness, coat a white piece of paper with the solution and arrange the objects as you wish. Then, expose the paper to sunlight, and watch the transformation take place.
Cut and Collage
Immerse yourself in colors, textures, and beautiful images with an afternoon of collaging. Start by gathering magazines, newspapers, paper mail, forgotten sketches, old gift wrap—anything vibrant you have lying around. Then, grab a pair of scissors and start snipping.
As you paste together beautiful textures, interesting objects, and words that resonate, you’ll create a composition all your own. It could tell a story, or be a vision board, or simply be mesmerizing to look at. Follow your instincts, and take it wherever your creative whims lead.
Candle Making
In dusty corners and forgotten cupboards, charming old vessels sit waiting for a second life. Gather your favorite vintage teacups, old mugs, decorative tins—anything beautiful that can also hold hot wax. Don’t be afraid to get creative with your vessels: some people even use oyster shells, acorns, or emptied out orange peels.
Next, set some beeswax pellets in a double boiler and gently melt them to a liquid. While you wait, drop a wick into the center of each vessel, securing it with a twig or skewer laid over the top. Finally, pour in the wax, allow it to thoroughly harden, and voila: you’ve turned empty vessels into beeswax candles that glow with aroma and ambiance.
Whether you do these activities alone or with a friend, as a thoughtful artistic practice or an afternoon of mindless whimsy, it’s a wonderful way to let inspiration flow. Savor the sensations, bask in the beauty, and lean into the swell sense of creativity that Wims unlocks!
