Chasing Distance and Delight for a Half Marathon

Wims was originally dreamt up as a beverage for the new social drinking. But really, it’s made to be sipped anywhere, any way you please—and that looks delightfully different for everyone! For example, earlier this month I paired Wims with a half-marathon along the Oregon coast. Some said I was nuts, but I’d describe the experience as scenic and serene. If you think you might feel the same, I’m here to share all the planning, preparation, and perspective that helped get me ready for race day.

Win Your Own Way

When I signed up for this half-marathon, I had a clear goal in mind: to feel good, both on race day, and during the training leading up to it. I’ve been running for about a decade, but my sweet spot in terms of distance has always hovered around five miles. I knew training for a half-marathon would mean pushing myself, but it was way more important to me to enjoy the process than hit any specific time. I’ve always savored my runs—I’m lucky enough to live near a forest, so most days I get to run across a river, through the trees, and along trails dotted with wildflowers. It’s pretty idyllic, a little bit meditative, and definitely enhanced by the flow state cannabis unlocks. Because my goals for this race mostly revolved around feeling good, it was an easy decision to make weed a part of my process.

Dial In Your Dose

In the past, I’d experimented with edibles while running—and while my experiences were mostly positive, I found that the high could feel a bit overwhelming, like music that’s playing just a little too loud. Because a half-marathon has so much to do with stamina, I wanted a high that felt light and lively, but still delivered the flow-enhancing feeling I was after. The quality of the Wims’ high—which I can best describe as bright, upbeat calm—turned out to be a perfect fit for running. I experimented with different doses, starting with a half-serving, a single, and even a double dose! Surprise, surprise: I learned that Wims is already perfectly proportioned, and a single dose delivered exactly the feeling I was after, at just the strength I wanted.

Pace Your Pocket-Tonics

The trickiest and most important part of my training (besides the actual running) was figuring out when to dose my drinkable. For five to seven mile runs, drinking a Wims right before leaving home was perfect. It left time for a couple miles au naturelle, and the effects kicked in when I might otherwise be hitting a wall. But if I drank a Wims right before leaving for a 10+ mile run, the effects would already be fading around the time I needed them most. Luckily, Wims has an ever-so-convenient form factor that makes it easy to pop a packet in your mouth mid-run. (Is this the most delicious way to enjoy Wims? No. But does it still taste good? Honestly, yes.) I found my sweet spot between miles three and four. It gave me a little lift through the second half of the run, around when my legs tend to tire, without feeling too overwhelming during the final push.

Lace Up For Race Day

I woke up on race day feeling ready to go. The sky was blue, the air was crisp, and my energy was high. I tucked a Wims in my pocket, laced up my shoes, and headed to the start line. I was still feeling fresh as I entered the fourth mile, but I knew from my training it was the right moment to drink my Wims. I popped it straight into my mouth without missing a beat. By the time it hit, I was glad I had. Throughout the second half of the race, Wims kept my pace steady and my mind present. It unlocked a subtle, shimmering high that helped me relax into a comfortable rhythm. I was able to savor all the sites and sounds along the route—the quaint beach town, scenic ocean views, clever signs from cheering neighbors, and even the high school marching band. I won’t say the final push was easy, but it also wasn’t super hard.

I crossed the finish line with my best time ever, and a cheering group of family and friends waiting on the other side. My time was a welcome bonus, but as for my performance on my real goal—to enjoy myself—I couldn’t have been any happier.
